Powder Coating Miami

One of the most popular services that our company deals in is powder coatings in Miami. Since the 1960’s powder coatings have become a choice for many. Powder coating in Miami can be used on a number of different products as it has several benefits and advantages over other types of finishes.

Powder coatings in Miami are known to produce a durable finish that has a high quality and lesser impact on the environment. It is available in a number of different colors and textures and is used for both functional as well as decorative purposes.

What Is Powder Coating Made Of?

Powder coatings are technically based on polymer resin systems. They contain pigments, leveling agents, curatives, modifiers and have other additives. All these ingredients are melted, mixed, cooled and ground into a fine powder that is uniform. Some of the most common ingredients of powder coatings in Miami are:

  • Resin- Resin is present in all powder coatings. There are two types of resin that is, polyester and epoxy and powder coatings will always contain either type.
  • Additives- Additives form a large part of powder coatings in Miami and several different types of additives can be present. Each additive is used for a certain purpose. For example some additives create a matt effect while others create a hardened finish. The most common additive used is benzoin and it is usually added to epoxy resin which results in melt viscosity and reduction of surface tension.

  • Curing agents - Curing agents are used to increase the longevity and durability of the powder coatings in Miami and it also helps to solidify the coating. If the powder coating contains polyester, then the main curing agent used are primed curing agents. If the powder coating contains epoxy then the curing agent used is dicyandiamide. Sometimes hybrid powder coating agents are used and these have the properties of both primed as well as dicyandiamide curing agents.
  • Post additives - Another important ingredient in powder coating is post additives. This helps to prevent the powder from caking and is added once the powder gets hard.
  • Tint pigments- Powder coating also contains tint pigments which bring color to the coating. The two types of tint pigments are inorganic and organic. In organic tint pigments are usually dull and pale whereas organic pigments are more vibrant.
  • Extenders- Extenders are also known as fillers and they provide the powder coating with a layer of durability. They are used to reduce gloss

What is Ceramic Coating?

Ceramic coating is very popular these days. It is a liquid polymer that is applied to the surface of a metal. It is a clear coating and is applied over a painted surface. When the ceramic coating is applied on a metal body, the polymers form a chemical bond with the paint and this will not wash away in the rain or by cleaning. It is applied in order to protect the metal from any chemical reactions and abrasion. One of the best examples of ceramic coatings, are its use on cars and in the automobile industry.

Some of the benefits of ceramic coatings are corrosion resistance, protection from stone chipping, mild scratch resistance and others.

What Does Ceramic Coating Do?

Ceramic coating performs the following:
  • Protection from oxidation and UV damage- When ceramic coating is used on substrates it adds protection. The sun and weather can have an effect on the paint and oxidation can make it look dull and faded. But when a layer of ceramic coating is used, protection is given to the item from the UV rays of the sun and this reduces the amount of oxidation that takes place.

  • Protection from etching and chemical stains- Another danger is chemical staining which takes place due to acidic contaminants. Ceramic coating helps to create a chemically resistant surface and prevents contaminants from bonding with the metal. So when you use ceramic coating on your car for instance, you can gain several more years of protection.

  • Ease of cleaning- Ceramic coating is hydrophobic in nature which means that it repels water. This means that water slides of the surface more easily and contaminants can be removed with little effort.

  • Enhanced gloss- If you want to add gloss to your painted item, ceramic coating is great choice. It adds a clear topcoat and this helps to improve clarity and depth. This enhances the look of the product and gives it a beautiful finish.

Methods in Which Ceramic Coating Is Applied

There are different types of ceramic coatings which can be applied to metals to enhance their properties. These ceramic coatings could be high temperature ceramic coatings, ITC ceramic coatings, ceramic insulation coatings and others.

Most ceramic coatings are good insulators as well and they provide good abrasion resistance for different metals. They can withstand high levels of temperature and it can even go up to 4500°F. Some of the common methods for applying ceramic coatings include:

Plasma spray

In this case the ceramic powder is passed at a very high temperature and through an ionized gas. This gas then sprays melted ceramic particles where it bonds onto the surface of the substrate. This results in a high density and strong adhering coating.

The detonation gun

The detonation gun method is very effective for certain ceramic materials like tungsten carbide which is used to produce very dense coating on a metal surface. In this process an explosion of acetylene gas and oxygen takes place at 6000°F. This melts into ceramic and is fired at high speed towards the substrate.

Oxygen acetylene powder

In this method, the ceramic powder gets heated under a flame which is as high as about 5000°F. It uses compressed gas in order to spray the ceramic onto the substrate. A porous layer is created which has relatively low adhesion strength.

Oxygen acetylene rod

In this method, a fused ceramic rod goes under an oxyacetylene torch at a temperature of 500°F. Next a pressurized gas is used to spray the melted ceramic onto the substrate thus producing the ceramic coating with a good cohesive bonding.

Paint versus Powder Coating

We can either use wet paint or powder coatings in Miami to finish metal work pieces. They are similar in function but each coating has its own advantages and disadvantages. Similarities between the two are that they both contain additives, resins and pigments but the main distinction is that paint contains solvent but powder coating does not. It is the solvent in the wet paint that keeps all its components suspended in the liquid form. But powder coating in Miami is applied directly as a dry powder. The other features like texture, color matching, application method and operator training comes from this main difference in chemical composition.

  • Application processes – Even though wet paint and powder coating differ in terms of liquid versus solid, the application method for both is quite similar. For instance pre-treatment is a requirement in both processes. Before either type of coating can be applied, the surface needs to be cleaned thoroughly. Oil, dirt, scum and moisture can interfere with adhesion. To apply powder coating in Miami, dry powder is forwarded through an electrostatic gun onto the metal substrate. It is the gun that gives the powder coating a negative charge and it is attracted to the grounded metal part. This results in even and fast application. Once the powder coating is done, the coated metal piece is cured and the heated powder gels. It is curing that ultimately creates thermal bonds and the result is a smooth and hard finish. When it comes to wet paint liquid paint comes through a fine spray. Even wet paint is electrostatically charged but much less compared to powder coating. Liquid paint can be applied only by trained experts in order to avoid sags or drips.  Sometimes liquid paint can be air dried and at other times it is placed in an oven for curing. Both liquid paint as well as powder coating generally includes a primer and color coat but when it comes to wet paint it often includes a clear topcoat.

  • Color matching – Powder coating in Miami has many advantages but in terms of color matching, wet paint is the winner. It is easy to mix different colors of liquid paint on-site to create custom and unique colors. But when it comes to powder coating in Miami, the color is a determined mainly by the plastics that are ground to form the powder. Since there is the lack of solvent when it comes to powder coating, it is difficult to mix two different colors to obtain a third color. However, it is possible to do custom orders for powder coating in Miami but it is time consuming and more expensive compared to liquid paint.
  • Performance – If the finish provided to the metal surface is damaged either by chipping or scratching, it gets de-valued as an effective barrier to the metal surface. When it comes to protection and performance, powder coating in Miami outweighs wet paint. Powder coding in Miami is resistant to scratching, chipping and other wear and tear because it undergoes thermal bonding during the curing process and it can be applied in thicker layers. It also has a superior power for color retention.

  • Health and safety- Powder coating in Miami is more durable than wet paint and easy to apply and store. Wet paint is flammable and detrimental to the health of the operators. It contains VOCs or volatile organic compounds which can cause respiratory issues and other health problems. Powder coating in Miami, on the other hand does not contain any solvent that evaporates and thus does not emit VOCs.
  • Cost- Powder coating in Miami is cheaper than wet paint if it is calculated in the long term. But it may have higher initial costs because it depends on newer technology. Another reason why powder coating in Miami is relatively economical is because it can be reused.  Whereas 70% of wet paint is lost during the application process it says due to over-spraying. It is also cheaper to use powder coating in Miami because labor costs are cheaper. Powder coating in Miami is easy to apply and does not need highly trained operators. The disposal cost for powder coating is also lower and it can be stored for a longer period of time.

How to Fix Scratched Powder Coating

Over time even high quality of the coatings can sustain damage and this may result in the necessity for powder coating repairs in Miami. Surface contaminants can lead to scratching and chipping and we follow a certain procedure to repair chipped or damaged powder coating
Cost Powder Coating Miami
  • Firstly we remove all the flaking and loose coatings from the damaged area either with a knife or a wire brush. Then we scrub the surface down with fine sandpaper and remove the chipped and scratched powder coating that is stubborn.
  • Then we use a metal brush or a power hand grinder to grind the repair area down to bare metal. This results in an even and smooth surface and gets it ready for touchup.
  • The metal is thoroughly cleaned before we start touching up the coating. Next we tape the area that needs to be repaired in order to prevent the material from transferring to the rest of the surface. Next we use a primer before adding the main touchup. Then we add the touchup material in layers until we reach the appropriate color and thickness.
